- The deal reflects the accelerating global race in humanoid robotics, with market projections ranging from $38 billion by 2035, according to Goldman Sachs, to $5 trillion by 2050, according to Morgan Stanley.
Meta Platforms has announced the acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a robotics startup focused on building intelligent foundation models for humanoid robots, in a move that signals Meta’s growing commitment to physical AI and next-generation robotics.
The company did not disclose the financial details of the deal but confirmed that ARI’s technology and team will become part of its broader AI ecosystem.
ARI Team Joins Meta’s AI Research Division
As part of the acquisition, ARI’s team — including co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto — will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, the company’s AI research unit focused on frontier intelligence systems.
ARI had previously raised a seed round backed by AIX Ventures and built its reputation around developing advanced AI models capable of enabling humanoid robots to perform real-world physical tasks.
Building Foundation Models for Physical Labor
ARI was developing foundation models designed to help humanoid robots understand, predict, and adapt to human behavior in dynamic environments.
Its technology aims to support robots in handling a wide range of physical tasks, including household chores and operational work, bringing humanoid robotics closer to practical consumer and industrial use.
The startup’s founders bring strong technical credentials. Xiaolong Wang previously worked at NVIDIA and currently serves as a professor at University of California San Diego, while Lerrel Pinto previously taught at New York University and co-founded Fauna Robotics, which was recently acquired by Amazon.
Why This Deal Matters for Meta
The acquisition supports Meta’s long-term strategy to expand beyond digital AI systems into embodied intelligence — AI that interacts directly with the physical world.
Meta has been investing in robotics research for years, with internal discussions and leaked plans previously revealing ambitions to build consumer-facing humanoid robots powered by proprietary AI models and hardware.
Even beyond product development, many industry experts believe that achieving Artificial General Intelligence will require AI systems to learn through real-world interaction, making robotics a critical part of the future AI landscape.
A Growing Global Race in Humanoid Robotics
The ARI acquisition reflects a wider industry trend as major technology companies race to build the next generation of intelligent robots.
Market forecasts remain highly varied. Goldman Sachs estimates the humanoid robotics market could reach $38 billion by 2035, while Morgan Stanley projects it could grow into a $5 trillion market by 2050.
As investment accelerates, humanoid robotics is increasingly emerging as one of the most competitive and strategically important sectors in the global AI race.
