- X Platform launches “Chat” as a replacement for direct messages, offering video and voice calls, file sharing, and the ability to edit or delete messages after sending.
- All conversations are now end-to-end encrypted, with alerts for screenshots, and this includes group messages and media.
Elon Musk’s X platform has announced the launch of its new messaging system, “Chat”, which replaces the traditional direct messages on the platform and offers features similar to popular messaging apps.
With the new update, users can now make voice and video calls, share files, and edit or delete messages after sending, with a clear focus on privacy through end-to-end encryption and alerts for screenshots of any conversation.
X revealed that the Chat feature is currently available for iOS and web users, and will soon be available on Android devices, according to a report by Engadget, a technology news site. The platform is also developing a voice notes feature to allow users to exchange voice messages.
X had been teasing this system for months and released an early version of encrypted messages earlier this year, but temporarily paused it in May to address some technical issues.
Now, encryption on X is stronger than before, allowing group messages and media to be encrypted as well, according to the platform’s help center. However, X warns that it does not provide full protection against man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, meaning any legal or insider breach could compromise encrypted conversations without the sender or receiver knowing.
X is currently developing additional tools to help users verify the reliability of encrypted conversations and ensure greater security in communication.
