Global Tech Leaders Converge in Ras Al Khaimah to Discuss Sustainable IT

Ras Al Khaimah, July 19, 2024: Ras Al Khaimah recently witnessed a significant event with global tech leaders converging to attend the “Circular Computing IT Sustainability Summit.” The summit was organized by Circular Computing, a UK-based company specializing in the remanufacturing of laptops and used computers, with its production facilities located in Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zones (RAKEZ). The conference successfully attracted participants from 65 global companies, including industry giants such as Microsoft, Dell, HP, Atos, Lenovo, Google, HSBC, Sharaf DG, DHL, Acer, Jacky’s, and Canon.

One of the key highlights of the summit was a survey conducted among IT industry leaders, emphasizing the importance of adopting sustainable practices in the manufacturing processes of companies worldwide to explore recycling methods within the IT sector.

Rod Neale, Founder and CEO of Circular Computing, remarked during the discussion of the summit’s results, “Our summit serves as a call to action for tech industry leaders, and I hope they have begun to view remanufacturing as a ‘new business’—a means to achieve sustainability in the IT sector. Overall, the consensus is clear: used technology will shape the future of the sector.”

Commenting on the success of the summit, Ramy Jallad, CEO of RAKEZ Group, said, “We congratulate Circular Computing on organizing such an impactful event in Ras Al Khaimah. This summit certainly represents a step forward in promoting a more sustainable approach in the tech sector, aligning with global environmental goals, and enhancing the practices of a circular economy in the IT sector. It is crucial for both companies and individuals in the emirate to embrace and adopt environmental sustainability. This not only supports the UAE’s initiatives to combat climate change but also strives diligently towards sustainable development.”

During the event, speakers urged stakeholders from both public and private sectors to consider a simple yet effective step toward enhancing the sustainability of their IT infrastructure. They proposed evaluating the actual need for the latest laptops versus the feasibility of distributing high-quality remanufactured laptops, which could significantly reduce electronic waste, lower carbon emissions, and help organizations achieve their 2030 climate goals.

Highlighting the practical impact of sustainable IT practices, Circular Computing recently signed a historic $33 million contract with the Irish government to provide sustainable IT solutions over the next four years. Under this agreement, the company will supply its remanufactured laptops from Ras Al Khaimah to Ireland, expanding its global presence and emphasizing the importance of remanufactured technology in meeting modern computing needs.
