During Techne Summit 2024 in Cairo, we had an exclusive interview with Mohamed Fahmy, the Managing Director of Sequence Ventures, the first investment management company specializing in “Deep Tech” in the Arab world. Mohamed discussed the company’s vision and efforts to support regional startups.
Introducing Sequence Ventures
Sequence Ventures was established in 2017 as the first investment company specializing in “Deep Tech” in the Arab world and Africa. Mohamed explained that all the company’s investments are currently focused on Egypt with local startups. “Deep Tech” refers to companies originating from research centers and aiming to turn their solutions into commercially viable products for businesses or individuals using digital technology.
Searching for Promising Startups
Mohamed noted that most promising startups in Egypt come from research centers. Sequence Ventures visits these centers to identify rising companies that can be transformed into successful commercial projects. The investment phase begins when the product is ready in a stage known as the “Minimum Viable Product” (MVP). After that, the product is tested in the market before actual investment starts.
Supporting the Startup Ecosystem
Mohamed emphasized that Sequence Ventures has spent seven years supporting the tech startup sector in the region. He explained that the company focuses on Arab markets because they now have large investment funds that require financial support to back these companies. Mohamed stressed that the Arab region, especially Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman, has become a primary target for the company.
Collaboration with Qatar
Mohamed revealed an existing partnership with Qatar to create a special investment fund for financing “Deep Tech” companies. He expressed optimism about this partnership and its expected positive impact on regional startups.
