DoorDash Exits Qatar and Three Other Markets to Refocus Global Strategy

  • DoorDash is exiting four international markets, including Qatar, to refocus on profitability and long-term scale.
  • Qatar’s food delivery market remains highly competitive, dominated by strong regional players.
  • The company will redirect resources toward markets where it sees clearer paths to leadership and sustainable growth.

US-based food delivery company DoorDash has announced it will shut down operations in Qatar, Japan, Singapore, and Uzbekistan as part of a strategic review aimed at prioritizing markets with stronger long-term growth and profitability potential.

The decision follows what the company described as a months-long evaluation of country-specific conditions. DoorDash stated that its current priority is to support local teams and partners through an orderly transition while concentrating resources on geographies where it can build scale and deliver sustainable performance.

Why Is DoorDash Leaving Qatar?

Qatar represents one of the most competitive food delivery markets in the Gulf region. The sector is largely dominated by regional players such as Talabat, owned by Germany-based Delivery Hero, which has operated in the country for nearly a decade with an established logistics infrastructure and strong brand loyalty.

Qatar’s online food delivery ecosystem has expanded rapidly in recent years, supported by high smartphone penetration, dense urban populations, and strong consumer preference for app-based ordering. Market projections indicate continued growth through 2027, driven by tourism and large-scale events.

However, analysts note that late entrants face significant structural barriers, including entrenched customer loyalty and well-developed delivery networks that require substantial investment to compete effectively.

Global Competitive Pressure Reshapes Expansion Plans

DoorDash emphasized that the exits will not materially impact its financial guidance. In fact, company shares rose in US trading following the announcement.

While DoorDash remains the dominant player in the United States, it faces intense international competition from companies such as Uber Eats, Grab (through GrabFood), Foodpanda, and Yandex Eats in various regional markets.

In recent years, DoorDash pursued aggressive overseas expansion, acquiring Wolt in 2021 to strengthen its European footprint and purchasing Deliveroo to deepen its presence across Europe and the Middle East. However, varying market dynamics and competitive intensity have prompted a reassessment of certain geographies.

Strategic Shift Toward Core Growth Markets

Moving forward, DoorDash will focus on markets where it sees clearer opportunities to achieve market leadership and profitability. The company has not specified a precise timeline for the shutdowns in Qatar and the other affected countries but confirmed that transitions will be managed in coordination with local merchants and partners to ensure operational continuity.
