Chinese technology giant Alibaba has unveiled Qwen3.8-Max, the latest large language model in its Qwen series, introducing major improvements in autonomous coding, research, and real-world task execution.

The launch comes as Chinese technology companies accelerate the development of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence models capable of completing complex assignments with limited human supervision.

Qwen3.8-Max Features 2.4 Trillion Parameters

According to Alibaba, Qwen3.8-Max contains 2.4 trillion parameters and supports a context window of up to 1 million tokens.

The expanded context window allows the model to process large volumes of text, instructions, research material, and software code within a single task.

This could make the model particularly suitable for complex software development projects, long-document analysis, advanced research, and tasks requiring continuous reasoning across extended workflows.

According to third-party evaluation platform Arena, Qwen models rank among the world’s leading large language models.

Advanced Autonomous Coding Capabilities

Alibaba said Qwen3.8-Max demonstrates strong capabilities in autonomous coding and long-horizon task execution.

The model can operate independently over extended periods without requiring continuous human intervention, allowing it to complete multi-stage engineering and research tasks.

Its workflow can include:

  • Generating software code.
  • Testing and debugging applications.
  • Previewing results.
  • Analysing system logs.
  • Identifying technical issues.
  • Improving the code through repeated iterations.

These capabilities enable the model to move beyond providing individual code suggestions and toward independently managing broader software development processes.

Alibaba Model Creates a Self-Evolving AI Agent Framework

To demonstrate its capabilities, Alibaba tasked Qwen3.8-Max with building a self-evolving artificial intelligence agent framework from scratch.

The model developed an engineering feedback loop that combined user feedback, community best practices, and data generated through its own testing processes.

By continuously repeating cycles of code generation, testing, previewing, and log analysis, the model produced a framework called oh-my-cli.

Alibaba has made the framework fully open source on GitHub, allowing developers to access, test, and contribute to the project.

Chinese AI Companies Accelerate Model Development

The launch of Qwen3.8-Max reflects the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence development across China’s technology sector.

In July, Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a model featuring approximately 2.8 trillion parameters.

The company described Kimi K3 as the world’s largest open-source artificial intelligence model by parameter count.

These launches highlight growing competition among Chinese AI developers, not only to create larger models but also to improve their reasoning, coding, research, and autonomous task-execution capabilities.

Chinese Open-Source AI Models Gain Global Momentum

Industry experts have noted that Chinese open-source large language models are moving from isolated breakthroughs toward broader and more collective technological progress.

The growing number of advanced Chinese models could provide developers, researchers, and businesses with additional options for building artificial intelligence applications.

It may also introduce new approaches to global AI development by expanding access to open-source models capable of handling complex professional and technical tasks.

The industry is increasingly shifting beyond traditional chatbot applications toward autonomous AI agents that can plan, execute, evaluate, and improve their work over extended periods.
