Meta Removes Instagram AI Photo Editing Feature After Backlash

Meta has withdrawn a controversial AI feature that allowed users to reference photos from public Instagram accounts, following criticism over privacy, consent, and potential image misuse.

Meta has removed a controversial artificial intelligence feature that allowed users to reference and modify photos from public Instagram accounts, following widespread criticism over privacy and consent.

The feature was launched earlier this week as part of a new collection of AI tools. Meta later acknowledged that the capability had “missed the mark” and confirmed that it was no longer available.

How Did the Instagram AI Photo Feature Work?

Earlier this week, Meta introduced Muse Image, a new AI image generator developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s dedicated artificial intelligence division.

One of the tool’s features allowed users to generate images by mentioning a public Instagram account with the @ symbol. The system could then use photos published by that account as a visual reference.

However, Instagram users were not automatically notified when their public photos were used in this way, triggering immediate concerns about privacy, consent, and the potential misuse of personal images.

Privacy Concerns Sparked Immediate Backlash

Critics argued that the feature could allow people to use publicly available photos to create new AI-generated content without the knowledge or permission of the original account owner.

The backlash was strong enough that technology publications began publishing guides explaining how Instagram users could disable the feature and prevent their public content from being referenced.

Meta ultimately reversed its decision and removed the functionality shortly after its launch.

Meta Says the Feature “Missed the Mark”

In an official blog post, Meta said its intention was to provide a useful creative tool while giving people control over whether their public content could be referenced.

The company added that it had listened to user feedback and concluded that the feature had not met expectations.

Puck News founding partner Dylan Byers was among the first to report Meta’s decision to withdraw the feature.

AI Image Tools Continue to Raise Safety Concerns

Meta’s decision comes amid growing concern about the misuse of AI image generators across social media platforms.

Such tools have increasingly been used to create misleading, manipulated, or sexually explicit images of real people without their consent, including female celebrities and public figures.

Technology companies have introduced safety measures and content restrictions to address these risks, but many existing safeguards have struggled to prevent abuse completely.

Meta’s reversal highlights the growing pressure on technology companies to balance AI innovation with user privacy, consent, and stronger protections against image misuse.
