Social media platforms are facing a growing spam problem, especially as AI tools make it easier to create large numbers of posts and comments quickly.
Reddit says it is now using tools powered by large language models, or LLMs, to detect spam, fake activity, and bot-like behavior more effectively.
The ironic part is that much of today’s spam is also being created with AI tools. This means platforms are now using AI to fight a problem that AI helped make worse.
According to Reddit, the platform blocks around 23 million spam views every day and detects about 25,000 new spam posts and comments daily.
The company says its updated AI tools can identify subtle patterns of fake behavior, coordinated activity, and artificial hype that older systems may have missed.
Reddit also says these tools helped reduce users’ exposure to spam by 20% from January to March, compared with the previous three months.
This comes as major platforms like YouTube, Meta, Instagram, and TikTok continue to deal with the rise of AI-generated content. Some platforms require users to disclose AI-generated content, while others are giving users more control over how much AI content they see.
However, AI alone is not enough for content moderation. Experts say human moderation is still important to understand context, reduce mistakes, and make fairer decisions.
