Amazon announced that several data centers operated by its cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS), in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain sustained significant damage after being targeted by Iranian drones, following attacks that hit a number of Gulf countries.

In a report cited by Reuters, the company said the attacks on the data centers disrupted some cloud computing services, adding that the recovery process is expected to take longer.

The targeting of logistical and critical facilities across the Gulf, including the UAE and Bahrain, came in retaliation for a series of strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iranian sites, which resulted in the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday.

AWS said in an update on its service status page:

“Two of our facilities in the UAE were directly hit, while a drone strike in close proximity to one of our facilities in Bahrain caused physical damage to our infrastructure.”

It added:
“These strikes caused structural damage, disrupted power supplies to our infrastructure, and in some cases required the activation of fire suppression systems, resulting in additional water damage.”

AWS confirmed that it is working to restore full service availability as quickly as possible, but noted that the recovery process is expected to be prolonged given the extent of the physical damage sustained by the facilities.
