OpenAI has officially entered the hardware market with the launch of the Codex Micro, a $230 illuminated keyboard designed to work with its AI coding assistant, Codex.
Developed in collaboration with specialist keyboard company Work Louder, the device is designed to help ChatGPT users manage AI coding agents that can write, test, and execute code with limited human input.
What Is the Codex Micro Keyboard?
The Codex Micro includes illuminated Agent Keys that display the current status of AI agents while they complete assigned tasks.
It also features customizable Command Keys that can serve as shortcuts for frequently used Codex actions, along with a joystick for launching common workflows.
Another key feature is a control dial that allows users to adjust an agent’s reasoning level. This setting determines how much time and computing power the AI agent uses to complete a particular task.
A Command Center for AI Coding Agents
OpenAI is positioning the Codex Micro as a command center for agent-based work.
Instead of managing coding agents entirely through a smartphone or desktop interface, users can control common actions directly from the keyboard.
The device can also be configured and customized through the ChatGPT desktop application, allowing users to assign shortcuts and adjust controls based on their preferred workflows.
OpenAI said the Codex Micro is being released as a limited-run collaboration, suggesting that it is more of an experimental or promotional product than a device intended for the mass market.
OpenAI Is Developing a Screenless AI Device
The keyboard launch comes alongside reports that OpenAI is working on a more significant consumer hardware product.
The company is reportedly developing a portable, screenless smart device that integrates with ChatGPT and functions similarly to a smart speaker.
The product is also said to include mechanical components capable of moving independently, although it remains unclear how its portability, screenless design, and moving elements will work together.
The device is still under development, and its design and features may change before an official release.
Former Apple Engineers Reportedly Involved
OpenAI’s upcoming device is reportedly being developed with the involvement of former Apple engineers.
The connection has attracted attention amid a legal dispute between Apple and OpenAI concerning confidential information and hardware development.
Apple has accused OpenAI’s senior leadership of pursuing a strategy to obtain proprietary information and use it while developing its own hardware products. OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing.
OpenAI’s move into hardware marks a major shift for a company best known for software products such as ChatGPT and Codex.
The strategy suggests that OpenAI wants to bring its artificial intelligence systems into physical devices that can be used more directly in professional and everyday environments.
