Google has announced a major update to Google Vids, introducing AI-powered personal avatars and new video creation capabilities powered by Gemini Omni. The update allows users to generate a digital version of themselves using a selfie and a voice recording while expanding Google Vids into a more comprehensive AI video creation platform.
Create a Personal AI Avatar from a Selfie
One of the biggest additions is the ability to create a custom AI avatar that looks and sounds like the user.
By uploading a selfie and a short voice recording, users can generate a digital avatar that can present videos without requiring them to appear on camera each time. The feature is designed for business presentations, training videos, internal communications, and other professional content.
Gemini Omni Brings Multimodal Video Generation
Google is also integrating its multimodal AI model, Gemini Omni, into Google Vids.
The new model enables users to create videos using a combination of text prompts and reference images. Gemini Omni processes these inputs together to generate AI videos that match the user’s creative vision, making video production faster and more flexible.
AI-Powered Video Editing Features
Beyond generating videos from scratch, Gemini Omni introduces several AI editing capabilities.
Users can replace video backgrounds, improve lighting, add visual effects, and enhance smartphone-recorded footage without relying on traditional editing software. These tools simplify video production while maintaining professional-quality results.
Edit Videos Step by Step
Google has also introduced step-by-step editing, allowing users to refine videos throughout the creation process.
Instead of recreating an entire video after every change, users can update specific elements such as backgrounds, lighting, or effects while preserving the rest of the project, making editing more efficient and user-friendly.
Google Vids Evolves into a Complete AI Video Platform
Originally launched as an AI-assisted workplace presentation tool, Google Vids is evolving into a broader AI video creation platform.
As part of Google Workspace, the service is designed for business use cases including employee training, company announcements, presentations, and marketing content. However, the addition of AI avatars and conversational editing expands its appeal beyond workplace productivity.
Competing with AI Video Platforms
The latest updates position Google Vids in direct competition with AI video platforms such as HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions, and D-ID.
These services have become increasingly popular for creating AI-generated spokesperson videos and digital avatars, and Google’s latest features signal its growing ambitions in the AI video creation market.
Built-In Identity Protection
Google says personal AI avatars are tied directly to the account owner’s identity and Google account to reduce the risk of impersonation.
Videos generated with these avatars will also include an invisible SynthID watermark, Google’s technology for identifying AI-generated content.
Additionally, access to personal avatars will be limited to users aged 18 or older and will initially be available only in selected regions.
