However, the company confirmed that the agreement with UMG is part of a broader strategy to develop artist-first AI products through formal licensing deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company had previously said it was working with major music partners, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe, to build AI tools based on upfront agreements rather than launching first and dealing with legal consequences later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach appears to be a clear contrast to companies such as Suno and Udio, which have faced legal action from major record labels over copyright concerns related to AI music generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify says its AI music tools will be built around three key principles: consent, credit, and compensation. Artists and rightsholders will be able to decide whether they want to participate, how their work can be used, and how they should be fairly paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alex Norstr\u00f6m, Spotify\u2019s co-CEO, said the company sees fan-made covers and remixes as the next step in music engagement. He added that Spotify\u2019s work in this area is grounded in ensuring that participating artists and songwriters receive proper recognition and financial reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge also described the partnership as an opportunity for artists to strengthen their relationships with fans while creating new revenue streams. However, neither Spotify nor UMG has announced which artists will participate in the new feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes at a time when demand for AI-generated music is growing, while legal uncertainty remains a major issue in the industry. Suno and Udio have already faced lawsuits from major music companies over the use of copyrighted material in AI model training and music generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suno reportedly settled a $500 million lawsuit with Warner Music Group in November, while Udio has reached settlements with Universal Music Group and Warner Music. However, both companies still face unresolved copyright disputes with other major labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By working directly with UMG, Spotify is positioning itself as a more legally secure and artist-friendly player in the AI music space.
