- SpaceX Moves Closer to $60 Billion Acquisition of Cursor to Strengthen AI Push
- Deal could reshape the AI-powered software development tools market
SpaceX is moving toward acquiring the startup software company Cursor, owned by Anysphere, in a deal that could reach $60 billion, as part of its strategy to expand its capabilities in AI-powered coding tools.
According to the details, the agreement gives SpaceX the option to activate the acquisition within the current year, along with a $10 billion termination clause in case the deal is not completed, amid intensifying competition in the AI-driven software development market.
Founded in 2022, Cursor is among the fastest-growing software companies in the sector, benefiting from a rapidly expanding base of software developers and increasing adoption of AI code-generation tools, making it a strategic target in the race to build AI infrastructure.
The move aligns with SpaceX’s broader strategy, led by Elon Musk, to build an integrated technology ecosystem combining large-scale computing and artificial intelligence, including the consolidation of xAI and other entities under a more unified structure.
The AI market is currently witnessing a surge in mergers and acquisitions among major players, driven by competition from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in developing developer-focused tools. This places Cursor at the center of one of the fastest-growing segments in technology.
If completed, the deal would mark a strategic shift for SpaceX from a space-focused company into a multi-layered technology platform spanning artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, as part of a broader effort to control the full value chain from computing to applications.
